Points of Pride: Reflecting on 10 Years of The Singular Santiago
It’s hard to believe that what was once a dream—The Singular Santiago—has now been a reality for 10 years. From our home on Merced Street in the Lastarria neighborhood, we’ve welcomed countless travelers from all over the globe, providing each with our distinctive brand of Chilean hospitality. Reaching this milestone makes us proud and invites a certain amount of reverie and reflection. So we’ve collected ten things we think have made our hotel truly Singular over the last decade.
Our Perfect Location in the Heart of Santiago The Singular is set in Lastarria, where Santiago was born… and where it’s perpetually reborn. This neighborhood has been Santiago’s creative crucible where some of its most notable artists, including the painter Camilo Mori, novelist Luis Orrego Luco and the liberal writer Jose Victorino Lastarria (for whom the neighborhood is named) have lived and thrived.
Guests have been able to enjoy iconic institutions like the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center and the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts (each just a short walk from the hotel), as well as the many bars, cafes, and restaurants nearby. Lastarria reflects the best of Santiago: its creativity, its ebullience, and its indomitable spirit. We’re prouder than ever to call this corner of our city home.
An Ideal Launching Point for Chilean Adventures Santiago is Chile’s most vibrant and populous city, and “offers a dynamic cultural landscape, with world-class chefs, design-forward shops, and energy to spare” (New York Times). Yet one of the best parts of staying with us, according to guests, has been the access to what’s all around our capital city. The Singular Santiago is the perfect launchpad for discoveries throughout Chile. Whether it’s a day trip to Valparaiso or the Wine valley or adventures farther afield such as Patagonia or the Atacama desert, we’re the warm, comfortable home-away-from-home where guests can rest their feet and get pampered before and after their explorations. We’re travelers ourselves, so we very much appreciate that we’re a part of larger adventures.
Classic Decor, Modern Amenities, Timeless Elegance A great deal of thought, planning, and work went into actualizing the vision of how The Singular Santiago would look and feel, and we’re still so pleased with it years later. Inspired by classical European design and elegance, the entire property was built with our guests in mind. Comfortable spaces are meticulously appointed. Tasteful touches—rich wood, supple leather, soft lighting—create a warm, welcoming environment within which to unwind after a day exploring the city.
Rooms are oversized with custom furnishings and high thread count fabrics. Bathrooms are overrun with white marble stretching from the vanity to the large soaking tub. From the front door to the rooftop and every inch in between, The Singular Santiago exudes refinement and charm. That’s the way we’ve always wanted it to be, and that’s the way it will be in the future.
Exquisite Cuisine in an Elegant Setting We’re passionate epicures, so we’re particularly proud of the gastronomy at The Singular Santiago. Our trained Chef Hernán Basso uses classical French techniques to create delectable dishes made from locally sourced natural ingredients found within Chile.
The menu is bountiful with fresh fish and seafood, as well as prime non-caged meats all assembled with the creative touch of an artist. Serving lunch and dinner, The Singular Restaurant has become a favorite not only of our guests, but of discerning locals in Santiago.
Our Resplendent Rooftop The crown jewel of our property is the rooftop bar, with two large terraces high above Chile’s capital and the historically important Santa Lucia Hill which played a key part in the formation of the city. This open-air oasis—which offers a “serious wow-factor,” according to The Telegraph—features a 26 ft marble bar, outdoor dining tables and chaise lounges perfect for soaking up some sun. Watching guests savor cocktails and gourmet snacks or just take in the awe-inspiring views of Santiago below continues to make us feel good 10 years later.
Our Spa: An Oasis of Indulgence
From the moment you enter the spa at The Singular Santiago, it washes over you: this is a place where you can unwind in uncompromising luxury. Though you are right in the buzzing heart of Chile’s capital, you’ll feel as though you are ensconced in a cocoon of revitalizing comfort.
This expansive facility was designed to have it all: four treatment rooms, Jacuzzis, saunas, steam rooms and even an area specifically created for women. Every detail of your experience—from the indulgently soft bathrobes to the gently scented air—is designed to help bring balance to the mind and body. We’re so pleased that the spa has built a reputation as one of the best in Chile.
Business Travel Bonafides It’s hard to imagine a more ideal hotel in Santiago for business travelers, and that’s not by mistake. We gave considerable thought towards creating an ideal environment for this audience, and are delighted that we seem to have become a favorite of so many. First, there is your room—a spacious and luxurious escape (with a large executive desk and superb WiFi) from which to take work calls and meetings in privacy.
Big ideas come from “singular” spaces, so the architecture and design of our meeting rooms are the reflection of an intimate and elegant space for your private meetings. It is even more gratifying that many business travelers decide to visit again when they are off the clock!
Impeccable Service That Lives Up To The Singular Name It’s been our steadfast goal since the start to provide a level of service that exceeds even the high expectations of our guests. Our dedicated, highly trained staff is utterly committed to—some might say obsessed—with anticipating needs and offering an experience our guests will rave about. And they do, which only pushes us to find ways to be better.
At Heart, We Remain a Family Endeavor Our city was built by generations of our forebears who created, adapted, and persevered to create a vibrant culture, and city. This includes the Sahli family, whose roots in Chile date back to 1913.
Fernando Sahli and his brothers ran the most luxurious hotel in Santiago—the Crillón—until it closed in 1978. Fernando’s sons continued working in the hotel industry, and Swiss-educated Felipe developed a strong reputation in the industry by helping establish hotels in Chile and Argentina. Felipe wanted to build on his family’s legacy in Chilean hospitality, so he created The Singular Hotel concept that has blossomed into the daringly unique and unfailingly enchanting properties in Patagonia and Santiago. The Salhi vision lives on today.
A Continuing Legacy of Excellence We’ve received myriad awards and accolades from renowned publications like Conde Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, Elite Traveler, the New York Times, Forbes, and… honestly too many more to list here.
We’ve also earned membership in The Leading Hotels of the World, an international consortium of luxury hotels around the world that must meet high standards of quality and service. Such honors aren’t the “why” for The Singular, but they are reminders that we’re meeting our commitment to our guests and our community. We’re certainly not resting on our laurels… we look forward to continually redefining what excellence means.
