The Singular Patagonia: Puerto Bories, Chilean Patagonia, Chile
Occupying a former cold storage warehouse on a remote fjord, the Singular is an architectural landmark and one of Chile’s most impressive hotels. The food and drink offerings as well as the interior décor and level of service deserve equal praise.
Location 9 / 10
Located an hour’s walk or a 15-minute bike ride (the hotel hires them out for free) from Puerto Natales, the hotel overlooks Last Hope Sound inlet and a beautiful mountain landscape. The Torres del Paine national park is a 40-minute transfer by car.
Style & character 9 / 10
The hotel is one of the most impressive examples of architectural adaptation in South America, carved out of a sprawling cold storage plant (which operated between 1915-1971). Part of the building is a fascinating museum, with the Victorian-era engine room, tannery, blacksmith shop and lots of machinery on display; bolted on to the back of this is a cool, contemporary hotel, with plenty of exposed concrete and bare wooden fixtures in keeping with the neo-industrial design ethos.
Service & facilities 9 / 10
The Singular offers a range of great packages, from one-night b&b to five-day offers with food and several excursions. Staff are well-versed in the riches of the region and can advise on everything from soft treks to hardcore mountain biking. On site there’s a library and reading room for winding down in the evenings, as well as a large spa, a heated pool, sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and a private suite with a whirlpool tub.
Rooms 9 / 10
The 54 large rooms and three larger suites all have a stripped-back décor, allowing guests to focus on the floor-to-ceiling picture windows and views of the Last Hope Sound and the Andes mountains. Custom-built furnishings are used in all the rooms, including comfy chairs and desks. The standard rooms have a king- or two queen-sized beds, while suites come with a king-sized bed, couch and lounge area. All have a separate bathtub and shower, plus a minibar, television and fast free Wi-Fi.
Food & Drinks 9 / 10
An excellent breakfast buffet is served in the main restaurant, with omelettes cooked to order. For lunch and dinner, the French chef and his army of understudies cook up fabulous fish and seafood ceviches, Patagonian hare and king crab and make good use of local produce such as white strawberries, rhubarb and seaweed. The bar is vast and expertly staffed and there’s an intimate asador (grill) room for barbecued beef, lamb and guanaco meals.
